Win loss ratio is wins divided by losses, looking only at deals where a buyer made a choice between you and a competitor. Win rate measures overall conversion efficiency. Win loss ratio measures head-to-head competitive performance. Both are useful. Neither tells you why.

Can't we just use call recordings instead of buyer interviews?

Call recordings show what your reps said. They don't show what your buyers were thinking. In head-to-head comparisons, buyer-reported reasons align with CRM-logged reasons only about 15% of the time. Recordings capture what happened in the meeting. Interviews capture what drove the decision - which often includes conversations, political dynamics, and internal processes that your sales team never saw.

What should a win loss analysis report include?

An executive summary readable in under 3 minutes. A win driver breakdown segmented by deal size and vertical. A loss driver breakdown with specific recommended actions for each driver. A competitive intelligence section showing who you are actually competing against, not who the CRM says you competed against. And for sales leadership, rep-level patterns framed as coaching opportunities, not performance evaluations.

How do you get buyers to agree to win loss interviews?

Keep the ask short and personal. Explain that you are doing research to improve - not to re-sell them. Offer a gift card for their time (most programs use $25 to $50). Send the outreach 2 to 4 weeks after the deal closes, when the evaluation is fresh but the emotional stakes of the decision have settled. Response rates are significantly higher when the request comes from someone other than the rep who worked the deal.
